Cancer is caused by an abnormal change in the body’s cells.
The human body is made up of a variety of cell kinds. Each cell sends out a signal that tells the body how much and how often it should divide, ensuring that enough cells are created to keep the body healthy. When the correct signal is not sent, the cell becomes abnormal, leading it to divide and multiply excessively. Tumours can be benign or cancerous. Benign tumours do not spread to other parts of the body and are not malignant. Malignant tumours, on the other hand, have the ability to grow and spread throughout the body. Our physicians and clinicians work as part of diverse clinical care teams lead by experts who specialise in specific cancer types. Specialists with extensive training and expertise in treating certain cancers, such as breast, lung, colorectal, gynecologic, head & neck, blood/hematologic cancers, and so on, make up our team of experts.
The doctors are part of a larger group that treats the patient as a whole, adapting each treatment plan to the patient’s specific needs.
A medical oncologist will lead your cancer treatment team, which may also include a surgical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, registered nurses, licenced dietitians, pain management physicians, physical therapists, and/or other support providers, depending on your needs.
The best chance of a cure is surgery, particularly if the cancer is limited and hasn’t spread. If it’s clear that the cancer hasn’t spread, surgery to remove it would be the first course of action. Our surgeons use a variety of surgical techniques, including minimally invasive and reconstructive procedures.
For families with a history of cancer, our preventive health centre provides counselling and information on inheriting disease, individual risk, cancer screening, and cancer risk reduction techniques.
